Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
