Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an grave threat to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
