The Princess of Wales's Traditional Yuletide Musical Celebration Honours Community Volunteers

The Princess of Wales is hosting her yearly Yuletide celebration at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The 1,600 guests will hear a mix of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

A Theme of Love and Generosity

The theme of the service, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

In the audience are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a terminally ill child.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the circumstances of individuals," Her Royal Highness stated in a message before the carol service.

A Gradual Return

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her first public speech for two years, in which she talked about recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Music and Opportunity

Attendees entering the Abbey can listen to young musicians supported by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the Duchess of Kent to widen access to instrumental training.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been assisted by the trust, with funding assisting with equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be playing at the evening's event.

"Pursuing music is often costly," the musician remarked. She is now enrolled at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to develop their musical skills.

A Sisterly Duo

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who is a euphonium player, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Within the audience will be representatives of different generations.

That will feature young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a young hero award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to collect donations for food banks.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be televised and shown on television on December 24th.
