Pentagon Investigation Concludes Hegseth Placed Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Chat.

A highly anticipated Pentagon review has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by disclosing classified intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in question contained particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the group allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not authorized for handling sensitive material.

Potential Threat to Forces

The internal investigation found that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the safety of US troops if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

However, the document also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he actually did so.

Secretary's Response

The source indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the mission. He further stated that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The completed report has been provided to Congress. An unclassified version is anticipated to be made public in the coming days.
