The National Football League has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a recent game at the Jets’ stadium.

Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.

“That was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”

He further clarified that the signal was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the wrong digit,” he noted. “It was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”

League Context for Owner Penalties

This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples include:

• Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
• Then Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.

Jones, a figure who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.

This event comes after a contentious preseason for Jones, who encountered significant criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star defensive player Parsons to the Packers.
